Liza stripped off her t-shirt and tied the arms and neck to make a sack, stuffing it with her finds from the beach as well as Dominic’s. I’ll admit it – her near-naked perfection was intimidating. It was amazing Dominic wanted me when my competition was the epitome of a Victoria’s Secret model. Maybe love really was blind.

“Please tell me he remembered to leave you the keys,” she whispered, bringing me back to the reality of our situation. This wasn’t a competition.

This was about our survival.

I held out my hand to show her the fob Dominic had placed in my palm. “He really will be okay, won’t he?”

“Dom’s not only fast, but he’s tough. I know he seems like this sweet, unassuming guy, but he was the star quarterback at Mystic High and was recruited by just about every top college out there. The NFL begged him to…”

A loud whistle pierced the night and the mayhem around Barry’s car stilled, followed by a stampede of running feet. It was our cue to get a move on.

“Let’s go.”

We made a mad dash for the car as the herd turned the corner a block up. I thought we’d actually made it, until strong arms crushed me against a broad chest and a hand clamped over my mouth. Liza had rounded the trunk of the Mercedes by the time she realized I wasn’t right behind her.

I twisted in my captors arms, looking to see how many others had stayed behind to ambush us. But there was only the one straggler – or strangler, depending how you looked at it. I waved Liza away, silently pleading with her to stay back. I tossed the keys in her direction hoping she’d get in the car and follow the plan without me.

My assailant began to drag me back toward the beach and I struggled as quietly as possible, not wanting to draw any of the others back to us, before I realized I was outmatched. My survival instincts kicked in and everything I’d learned while imprisoned came flooding back. It was a real Jedi Knight moment.

I stomped my foot down on his instep right before throwing my head back with as much force as possible. He was considerably taller than I was, so I ended up connecting with his chin, but it was enough to make him loosen his hold. I used the extra space to swing an elbow into his solar plexus.

His arm released me completely as he bent over to catch his breath and Liza, who had kept her cool for once, snuck up from behind and delivered a mighty blow to his manhood. I heard a shriek, but didn’t stick around to gloat.

“That had to hurt,” I panted as I threw myself into the driver’s seat.

“I think I broke my toe. Damn flip-flops.”

“I was talking about the nut punch.” To be safe, I took a round-about route to the lot where Dominic was to meet us. The minutes ticked by like days as ten turned to twenty and then hit the one-hour mark.
